Description
Rare, Exquisite Quality Civil War Surgeon's Mechanical Rotary Trepanning Saw. Used to drill/ cut a hole in the skull in order to relieve pressure on brain tissue. 12" overall in excellent condition. Heavy 3½" ebony hand grip and ivory knob for rotating. Ivory knob with a couple of minor age cracks but very sound with nice mellow patina. Brass base that mounts the saw with a sliding gauge adjustable for depth with blued steel wing nuts. Works perfectly with initials "J.S" engraved on the handgrip bolster. Very fine example of a Civil War medical instrument rarely seen on today's market.Auction Info
