Description
Rare Civil War-Era 13 Star Camp Flag. 18 x 22-inches, press-dyed on wool bunting. A flag of this size, the smallest flag used for military purposes, was flown outside of tents to mark encampments. Made of press-dyed wool with an integrated sleeve at the hoist end lined with cotton or linen for strength. Only one other flag of this configuration is known to exist. Typically camp flags are found with a star count fewer than 34 or greater than 35. According to flag expert Howard Madaus, flags with 13 stars were known to be carried by Civil War troops for use in camp and in the field, but not used as battle flags. The 13-star count is far more common in homemade examples, but true military production flags are far rarer outside maritime use. In any case, this is a particularly choice example, bright and with only five trivial holes.Condition: Excellent.
