Description
Rare and Complete Model 1851 Dragoon Saber Belt. This white buff leather U.S. Dragoon belt rig is unusually fine and complete, with all saber and shoulder straps intact and its original waist belt plate still in place. Although dirty from use and storage, the leather is completely pliable, has taken a pleasing mellow patina, and retains its original texture. Similar in condition, the original sword belt plate with its separately affixed, three piece silver wreath fits the fastening loop snugly and the two have obviously always been together on this belt. Likewise, all brass trimmings are present and have the same wonderful patina. The set is unmarked except for a small stenciled owner's name, now indecipherable, on the inside. Most of these belt sets were dyed black or brown at the end of the 1850s to conform with later regulations, making those found untouched highly sought after and, in this remarkable condition, excessively rare. It would be near impossible to upgrade this example.Auction Info
