Description
Presentation Grade, Silver Grip, Civil War Cavalry Officer's Saber by Henry Folsom, St. Louis, Mo. Folsom was in business as a dealer in military goods in St. Louis between 1859 and 1864. The hilt, which is quite heavy and reminiscent of a M1840 saber, is decorated on the outward branches with acanthus leaves and where the hilt joins the pommel with a stippled leaf and floral motif. The quillon exhibits a deeply cast shell and floral motif. The swirled silver grip bears a small touchmark on the reverse side attesting to its silver content and is wrapped with twisted brass wire flanked by single strand brass wire. The 34½" blade is typical of a M1860 saber with central etched panel on the obverse with spread wing eagle, motto and rays. An equivalent panel on the reverse displays a large US flanked by scroll work. The obverse ricasso is lightly etched H. Folsom/St. Louis, while the reverse bears the knight mark of W. Clauberg/Solingen. Blade smooth and light gray with absolutely no rust or pitting, very nice. All three brass mounts on the steel scabbard are profusely decorated with engraved floral motifs with stars on the ring mounts. Very fancy scalloped drag. The scabbard is smooth with just a few tiny nicks, absolutely no rust, pitting or dents and a very pleasing light gray color. Hilt retains much of the original gold wash while traces remain on the scabbard mounts. A most attractive sword, in very desirable condition by an extremely rare maker.Auction Info
