P1854 Austrian .58 Caliber Percussion Short Rifle Picked Up from the Fields of Appomattox by Salathiel A. Hitchcock, Co. C 62nd Ohio Vol. Inf. with Period ID to Samuel Triby, Co. A, 35th Bn. Virginia CavThe gun has been broken through the wrist and the trigger guard bent, doubtless by Triby prior to his surrender at Appomattox. Hitchcock, who joined the 62nd Ohio on February 24, 1864, was actually captured, and briefly held, by the Confederates on April 9, 1865 in fighting at Appomattox. Triby, whose name appears as alternately Samuel James and James W. Tribby in records, although doubtless the same man, in White's Battalion, 35th Va., enlisted February 6, 1862, was captured near Woodgrove, Virginia September. 25, 1863, sent to Point Lookout, Md., and exchanged February. 18, 1865, being listed as present on the regimental roster on February 18, finally surrendering at Appomattox. "SAMUEL(L upside down) TR / IBY" deeply carved in 7/8" high letters on the right side of the butt stock. Unquestionably authentic and of the period. The history of the gun is included on an old typewritten sheet of paper and states that Hitchcock brought the gun home stating that it had been "broken in battle" and stating it is complete with its bayonet and scabbard which still accompany the gun.
The gun is overall completely untouched/ uncleaned with smooth dark brown patina overall, just some pitting at the breech and on the front of the lock. The gun has been completely broken through at the wrist, now held together by two old wood screws, although only a few splinters are actually missing. The trigger guard has been bent, obviously as a result of the blow that shattered the wrist. The wood otherwise is actually excellent with nice dark untouched patina and the gun is complete with the exception of the ramrod, and includes the original bayonet and a scabbard, which is period but incorrect, although obviously there for a long time, and now form fitted to the bayonet. Bayonet also in excellent untouched condition. A fascinating Civil War artifact with what is doubtless a remarkable story to tell.
