Description
Outstanding Extremely Rare Federal Hanes Grenade. This grenade is made of an inner and outer sphere. The outer sphere unscrews to reveal the inner sphere which is studded with 12 to 14 nipples for percussion caps. The outer casing acts as an anvil so when the grenade is armed and thrown the inner sphere hits against the side wall and fires one of the percussion caps which in turn ignites the bursting charge. Though a piece of an inner sphere has been recovered at Vicksburg the government never purchased any for official use. This specimen is very clean and unscrews to reveal the inner sphere and the nipples. The outside of the shell as well as the inside is in mint condition. The outer shell is clearly marked "W. W. HANES-PATENTED AUG. 26, '62."Auction Info
