Description
Outstanding Confederate Artillery Officer's Chasseur Cap. This colorful Southern artillery officer's cap ranks among the Civil War's most desirable pieces of headgear. The chasseur pattern cap rises 3½" in the front and the full red wool body is trimmed with thin gold cording up the front, back and sides and in a circle on the crown. It sits on a very deep blue 1½" wide woolen band. The ½" wide, narrow chin strap of thin glazed leather is fastened by means of two U.S. General Staff buttons (with unmarked tinned iron backs) as commonly seen on many Confederate garments, with a single loop on one end and a brass buckle on the other. The original squared, bound visor appears to be made from tarred or glazed stiffened cloth. On the front is a pair of gold embroidered crossed cannon sewn to a velvet patch measuring about 1¾" x 1¼". Much of the velvet is worn smooth but there are indications it was originally red in color. The full 1¾" wide leather sweatband is intact as is the tan polished cotton lining, which is quilted on the crown. The cap is in overall wonderful condition with two negligible moth nips on the crown and a short stitched repair on the front above the insignia. There are also some very minor areas of fraying to the gold trim. This colorful style was favored by many officers serving in Confederate States artillery units and is exceedingly rare today. Very appealing and historic.Auction Info
