Description
Outstanding and Rare New Jersey Officer's Jacket, Vest and Trousers. Perhaps among the most attractive and desirable uniform groupings to be offered in recent years is this dashing and nicely tailored lieutenant of infantry ensemble with a strong attribution to the famed 12th New Jersey Volunteers. The jacket is the quintessential waist length jacket fashionable among many Civil War officers North and South. It retains all its original State of New Jersey buttons; nine down the front and three at each cuff (backmarked "Extra Quality"). The sleeves are cut in the classic manner, with wide ballooned elbows tapering to narrow cuffs. At each cuff is a single strip of thin gold braid forming a decorative trefoil and indicating the rank of first lieutenant. A hook and eye arrangement closes the base of the 1¼" tall stand-up collar. On the shoulders are affixed the original double rich insignia of a 1st Lt. of Infantry. Each strap measures 1½" x 3½" and has two rows of gold embroidery bordered on each side by gold spun wire, with the same double row of gold making up each rank "bar" embroidered on a medium blue velvet background. The interior is the typical deep green, quilted polished cotton lining with white and lavender striped cotton sleeves. This exceptional coat shows only minimal wear with a handful of negligible moth nips and the discoloration inside the sleeves to be expected with wear in the field.With the coat is its original matching vest with low stand-up collar. The garment has seven of the original nine State of New Jersey buttons down the front along with the usual chest pocket and waist pockets at each side. There is also a large interior pocket in the tan polished cotton lining. The back panel is darker polished cotton and adjusts with a narrow belt of the same material, having the typical "Patent 1859" japanned buckle. The vest's dark blue wool body is in excellent condition, with only the polished cotton lining showing some minor tearing and discoloration from period use.
The set is completed by its original pair of regulation trousers, constructed from the same fine dark blue wool as the jacket and vest. The trousers have the correct high back and narrow waistband with an inset watch pocket and all six suspender buttons. A small belt adjusts the vented back. The two hip pockets close by means of small gutta-percha buttons and two of the five original buttons remain at the fly. As per regulation, a narrow medium blue welt is set into the length of each outer seam and the interior of the cuffs are reinforced with wide bands of canvas. Condition is near excellent with some negligible moth nips and some wear in spots to the outer seam stripe.
This grouping was obtained directly from the family twenty-five years ago and has never before been available on the collectors' market. Unfortunately the name of the original owner has been lost to history, but the family residence was in a town pivotal to the organization of the 12th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry and photographs exist of officers from that unit wearing similar garb. The 12th New Jersey was the only unit from that state to serve in the Second Corps and fought with distinction at Gettysburg and at all the major engagements of the Army of the Potomac. Uniforms with New Jersey connections are exceedingly difficult to find, particularly this attractive and complete.
