Description

Original Civil War Patriotic U.S. Flags: Large Lot of Forty Silk Flags, Various Sizes, Various Patterns. The consignor indicates that their family owned a textile company during the Civil War and these spectacular examples have remained in family hands since that time. All examples are roll-printed on silk and are double-sided. Each flag has 34 stars, a flag used from January 29, 1861, with the admission of Kansas, until June 20, 1863, with the admission of West Virginia. Most of the flags feature variations of the grand star pattern with 34 smaller stars arranged to form a single large star. The lot in detail includes: (1) One large 34" x 24", double-sided 34-star flag, the largest example in the group. (2) Six 11" x 8" flags, several uncut. (3) Seventeen 10" x 7" examples, three individual and several uncut examples. (4) Sixteen 6.5" x 4" examples, including a strip of 10 uncut flags. The flags remain in remarkable condition with only a few examples with small holes or storage staining, otherwise they are in excellent, untouched condition.
