Description

New Orleans and Slavery: Civil War Era Scrapbooks. Two scrapbooks assembled during the Union occupation of New Orleans. One example, 10" x 14" with marbled boards, is comprised entirely of newspaper clippings from November 1863 through the end of 1864 (detached boards, loss to leather spine). The other scrapbook also covers the 1863 to 1864 period and contains many interesting pieces glued in. The inside front cover has a 2 1/2" x 1 1/2" coated stock store card for "Mackey & Day Auctioneers" of New Orleans, dealers in "Real Estate, Negroes, Horses, Mules, Carriages, and Every Description of Merchandise." Next we have a wonderful "Vicksburg Whig Extra" dated March 25, 1863, announcing the failure of two Union gunboats to breach the defenses of the city. There are two printed documents related to Nathaniel Banks' General Order No. 12. The larger one, dated February 5, 1863, from the U. S. Sequestration Commission, requires slaves to return to their plantations, "maintain respectful deportment to their employers and perfect subordination to their duties", in return for a 1/20th share of the crop or a fixed monthly compensation, in addition to being properly treated, fed and clothed. There's a pass for a lieutenant to pass through picket lines, Baton Rouge concert handbills, a Confederate $5 bill and 1859 bank draft removed from the house of CSA surgeon Dr. Leishbrook, a military-related letter of recommendation datelined Port Hudson, an 1863 manuscript military order from Opalousas, a large 2-page letter written to General C. C. Augur from the "U. S. Steamer Richmond Below Port Hudson, La. April 17, 1863" providing a report of activities by Captain Alden, numerous printed General Orders with signatures and assorted odds-and-ends. Marbled boards, covers detached, loss to leather spine. A great historical record!
