Description

Nathan Bedford Forrest: Carte de Visite by Morse's Gallery of the Cumberland.

A renowned Confederate general of the Civil War, Forrest served as a cavalry officer in multiple engagements, including the Battles of Shiloh, Brice's Crossroads, Chickamauga, and Second Franklin. He conducted successful raiding operations and was known for being fierce in battle and utilizing brilliant cavalry tactics. This particular portrait and view is thought to be the only one in existence and can be seen on page 138 of The Confederate Generals, edited by William C. Davis and Julie Hoffman. Most likely taken in 1864 or 1865, this CDV shows Forrest as a major general or lieutenant general. Below him is an inkblot and the handwritten inscription, "Genl N.B. Forrest/ CSA." The back is printed with the studio information, "Morse's Gallery of the Cumberland,/ 25 Cedar St., opposite the Commercial Hotel,/ Nashville, Tenn." "No. Negative" appears at the top where further information has been penciled in: "Gen. Nathan Bedford Forrest (C.S.A. Cavalry)/ Battels [sic] Dec 20, 1862 w/Gen. B. Bragg." Light toning is present with two dark-colored scuff marks at the right edge, one having ripped a small area of the top layer of paper. Two tears are barely visible, one at the center of the top edge with a tiny hole and the other at the upper left edge. Sides are trimmed unevenly, and the back has light soiling. Overall, this CDV is in great condition, retaining much of its lovely contrast. The B.G. Chip Newman Collection
