Description

Moore's .41 Caliber Rimfire No 1 Derringer With Interesting Engraving Standard pistol, top of barrel marked "Moores Pat F.A. Co Brooklyn N.Y." Engraved barrel exhibiting 20% silver plate the rest smooth gray finish, frame with 30% silver plated finish. Frame scroll engraved, the left side featuring a finely engraved two masted steamship flying the American flag with the name "Vidette" engraved beneath. Directly behind the hammer is a riband engraved with the name "Capt Rainer". Action is tight, dark bore. A cursory examination of records reveals a Captain William Rainer who served in Company F of the New York Marine Artillery from 10/22/61 to 1/1/63. In 1862 Captain Ranier was ordered to New Berne, N. C. and took command of the U. S. Army gunboat Vidette, It was obviously at this point that Ranier acquired this pistol. The Vidette was engaged, along with U. S. Navy gunboats, in action against Confederate positions.A very interesting little pistol worthy of more research.
