Description

Mint Condition Pre-War Stand of Quilted Grape. This stand of quilted grape consists of thirty-six 1.00 inch iron or lead balls arranged in six rows of six each. The sabot and center ridge is of wood. The whole is wrapped and sewn in a heavy canvas that has been painted orange and is held in place by thin wire. The wire and paint is original. Wooden base has a slightly oval shape to it. One side of the base is marked with "D #21" in white paint while opposite of this is "STAND OF GRAPESHOT FOR 3"-FIELD GUN 36-1 INCH BALLS-WOOD CORE" in black ink or paint. This exact specimen was used on page 79 of "INTRODUCTION TO FIELD ARTILLERY ORDNANCE 1861-1865" by Jack W. Melton, Jr. and Lawrence E. Pawl. This round was meant for use in a 4-pound smooth-bore gun.
