One of the finest examples, and the only marked specimen known.
Massive Roman Pattern Confederate Foot Artillery Sword attributed to Boyle Gamble & McFee, Richmond, Virginia. 24½" overall with slightly wasp waisted heavy 18½" blade. Single harrow central fuller on both sides. Blade with scattered light pitting with a small patch a bit heavier near the tip, but very good with no nicks or sharpening. Heavy ribbed brass grip with large ovoid ball pommel and unusual flat faced cross guard. The guard is marked with a deeply die stamped cartouche "MEKIN". While the precise significance of this mark is unknown it is most likely the founder who cast these well made hilts. Hilt overall with wonderful dark untouched patina, exhibiting some minor casting flaws and a few scattered dents. The heavy back stitched leather scabbard retains the original rather crude brass tip and throat with an ovoid frog stud. The original leather frog is decorated with a rather crude double incised line around the bottom edge, is stitched at the top and sides, and utilizes copper rivets where the belt suspensions were attached which are now missing. Al large letter F is carved on the face of the frog. Scabbard near perfect sound condition, the frog also excellent. Probably the most desirable example extant of this rare maker identified Confederate sword.Auction Info
