Commanded the 62nd New York at Gettysburg
Magnificent Civil War Sword Presented to Lieut Col. Theodore B. Hamilton, 62nd New York Infantry "Anderson's Zouaves". This exquisite highly gilded sword presented to Lt. Col. Hamilton features a 32.25" gilded blade etched on the obverse ricasso "Schuyler Hartley & Graham New York" and is elaborately etched for 22" of its length with scrolls, stands of arms, flags, American eagles, and interlocking "US". The reverse ricasso stamped "W. Clauburg Solingen" and etched with scrolls, stands of flags with the central motto " We Never Surrender". The blade retains most of its gilding, the remainder bright. The back of the blade etched "Iron Proof" with 21" of gilded vine / leaf decorations.The hilt consists of an elaborate basket guard with foliate openwork featuring the bold old English letters "US", the reverse displays a small folding guard with pierced floral motif. Under the primary guard is a small counterguard exhibiting a highly detailed interlocking shell motif. Elaborate knuckle bow with heavy cast rococo designs and the pommel uses acanthus leaves around the top with extensive deep relief scrollwork and full head of Lady Liberty on the face with stars and acanthus leaves on her head dress. On the pommel cap is a plain gilded screw. The silver grip straps feature an engraved chevron design, the grips are mother of pearl, carved in a fishscale pattern, centered on each scale is a small silver star- one missing. The hilt retains 95% of its original gilded finish.
The gilded brass scabbard exhibits heavy cast mounts primarily using elaborate shell and rococo designs. Centered on the lower ring mount is a raised relief 1" high cherub astride a bird, this element is loose but could be easily reattached. The upper mount is missing its central design element, the rings display a leaf design. Centered between the mounts, and finely engraved is the presentation; "Presented To Lieut Col T.B. Hamilton by the Non Commissioned Officers & Privates of the 62nd Regt N.Y. Vols. Anderson Zouaves as a token of their regards and esteem. All Honor To The Brave". The scabbard is in fine condition displaying 90% original gilded finish.
Theodore B. Hamilton enlisted on May 22, 1861, at Elmira New York as a captain and was commissioned into Company G, 33rd New York Infantry. He was discharged for promotion on December 27,1862, and was commissioned into the Field & Staff of the 62nd New York Infantry. Captured and exchanged for W .L. Wingfield 28th VA. Wounded at Maryes Heights Fredericksburg May 3, 1863, and again at Spotsylvania May 9, 1864. Took temporary command of the regiment at Gettysburg on July 1, 1863, and permanent command of the regiment June 30, 1864. Promoted to colonel August 1, 1864, mustered out with the regiment August 30, 1865.
The 62nd New York Infantry, known as "Anderson's Zouaves" served mainly with the Army of the Potomac with brief duty with the Department of West Virginia and the Army of the Shenandoah. The unit saw much action throughout the war in such battles as Williamsburg, Fair Oaks, Richmond, Malvern Hill, Fredericksburg, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Wilderness, Petersburg, and Appomattox.
