Description

Lot of Civil War Related Items, including: an Autograph Letter Signed by Commissary Sergeant Cyrus Oakes, October 3, 1862, Camp Lew Wallace, Kentucky, one page, 7¾" x 9¾", front and verso. In the letter to his father, Oakes expresses his frustration, "The Rebels are still playing hell around here. My god [sic] when I see the suffering the poor Soldiers have to go through with, I feel like exterminating the whole South. God damn the rebels. I say they have no principals, ask a prisoner what they are fighting for and they don't know. It is all a damned hoax. Rebellion won't pay." The letter is sold with the original transmittal envelope, a printed advertising envelope of the I. M. Singer & Co., Edward Oakes, agent; three unused patriotic envelopes, one with an image of Jeff Davis hanging from a gallows, another with "Texas - The Rebel States", and yet another with the seal of the State of Texas. All items fine or better.
