Description
Likely Ex-Slave Union Army Enlistment Form, two pages, partially printed, 8.25" x 11", Charleston, South Carolina, April 21, 1865. Twenty three year-old carpenter Toby Du Burst here enlists in the U. S. Army. His mark is witnessed by officers of the 94th Ohio Volunteers and the 11th Iowa Volunteers. Light aging, else very fine condition. With brown eyes, black hair and a "light" complexion, the recruit was probably a freedman. It is also improbable that a white South Carolinian would have entered Federal service in April, 1865.Auction Info
