Description

Lieutenant William M. Camp, 4th Ohio Volunteer Infantry US M1850 Staff & Field Officer's Sword. Inscribed in period script in a shield shaped panel on the top mount, "Lieutenant/ W. M. Camp/ 4th Ohio/ Vols." The 32" blade is generally smooth and gray with some touches of luster, absolutely no rust or pitting and is etched for approximately half its length. The obverse with arms panoply, scrollwork and spread wing eagle with motto, perched on oak leaf and laurel branches. The reverse with arms panoply including American flags, scroll work and drapery, the central panel displaying a large fancy script US. All etching deep and crisp, W. Clauberg/Solingen with knight on the reverse ricasso, and Iron Proof on the back of the blade. The regulation hilt is about perfect and features an American shield on the face of the pommel cap. The hilt retains the original gilt in recessed areas. Sharkskin grip excellent just showing some minor honest use. Triple brass wire wrap excellent with just one loose strand. Steel scabbard with smooth dark patina, absolutely no dents or bends, with just two small patches of light pitting below the middle mount, minor. The brass mounts are profusely engraved with floral and scrollwork, all highlighted with stars. Brass carrying rings and throat. All near perfect with just a few shallow, minor, dents on the reverse of the lower mount.

Camp enlisted as a Sergeant in the 4th Ohio on June 6, 1861 and was promoted to 2d Lieut. August 9, 1st Lieutenant June 21, 1862, and Captain March 1, 1863. Thus the sword's point of origin doubtless dates to the period June 1861 thru February 1863, with the June '61 date being more likely. Camp mustered out with the regiment June 21, 1865. During Camp's term of service the regiment was engaged initially in West Virginia, and subsequently with the Army of the Potomac, including actions at Cedar Creek, Winchester, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, The Wilderness and Spotsylvania. Very nice sword with an excellent history.
