Description

Letter Describing Military Execution. 2-page letter written in ink on both sides of a 4 3/4" x 7 3/4" sheet , Yorktown, Virginia, from Lt. William Wilson, 172nd Pennsylvania Infantry, to his parents. "... Day before yesterday two men were hung here. The Infantry Cavalry and Artillery were all paraded on the parapet of Fort Yorktown or around the galows. It was a stern array of armed men and a terrible scene to witness. Our regiment manned the parapet. The prisoners exhibited much firmness. They were Catholics and a priest came with them to the galows where he prayed with them at the foot of the stairs and also on the drop. They fell some 8 feet breaking their necks..."
