Description
Large Archive of a Soldier from the 128th Indiana. This archive of more than sixty letters traces the service of Pvt. Israel Davis who enlisted as a Private in Co. F, 128th Indiana in January 1864 and remained until the regiment was mustered out in February 1866. At least thirty of the letters date from 1864 and the remainder from 1865. Almost all the letters are in ink in a strong hand and easily read, although there is a liberal use of phonetic spelling which adds to the impact of the collection. A number are on patriotic stationery or paper provided by the Christian and Sanitary Commissions. The letters include the usual chattiness about camp and inquiries about home, as well as some battle content including a missive about the Battle of Franklin ("we tuck several stands of colors from them. the[y] come up within ten feet of us") and the progress of Sherman's assault on Atlanta (we are...wating [for] the rebels and [listening] at the big guns shelling the Breast Works and the city"). One of the most interesting letters in the group is to Davis' wife from his Captain. Apparently answering her concern upon hearing her husband was in the hospital, the Captain advises her not to worry as he was not sick but was "in trouble of mind" as her letters have apparently made him "home sick and discouraged." He asks her to "look upon the bright side of things and represent everything in as favorable light as possible" so that her husband can "do his duty to his country" with a "brave heart and a willing mind" and not worrying that his family is "in trouble on his account." Most of the letters were once bound in a volume that has deteriorated, leaving only the remnants of the spine and some threads connecting a few of the the letters together. This could (and should) be easily removed. With a few additional letters to him and from other writers, this is a very nice and lengthy archive capturing one man's service to the Union.Auction Info
