Description
Large 5th Army Corps Headquarters Flag.6' x 4' 2nd Division, V Corps headquarters flag, made of bunting, featuring the corps symbol, a Maltese Cross, against a red background. Corps and divisions were assigned symbols in the Spring of 1863, so this flag dates to the 1863-1865 period. It is hemmed on the top, bottom and fly. The canvas hoist houses the original tie-strap/rope with wooden anchor-peg at one end. There is a faint stencil inscription on the hoist. The first part is clearly "4 x 6" while the other two words seem to be "HD'TER HOIST". It is machine-stitched. An area in the middle was cut out so that the Maltese Cross, once sewn into place, could appear on both sides. There is a small rip/area of loss in the upper right corner. What appears to be seams in the material are actually part of the weave pattern. Both the cross and the red background are single pieces of material. There is a 3" difference in the length of the diagonals - a sign of authenticity as flags stretch when flown for extended periods. There is light soiling, consistent with outdoor use.
The 5th Corps included the "Iron Brigade" and Chamberlain's 20th Maine. They served with distinction in almost every battle of the Army of the Potomac, foremost among them, Gettysburg. This flag appears identical to one that appears in a period soldier's sketchbook, identified as the General George Meade's Headquarters flag. That flag has a red cross on a white background, signifying the 1st division. This flag, with a white cross on a red background, is from the 2nd division.
