Description
Joseph E. Johnston Autograph Letter Signed, "J.E. Johnston". One page, 5.5" x 5.25", Washington, D.C., March 26, 1884, to Darwin C. Pabry. It reads, "Your note of the 22d inst is just received. Genl Albert Sidney Johnston and I were distantly related, being of the same Scotch family." Light aging, minor stains on verso. Overall fine condition. General Joe Johnston deserves the thanks of all Americans for surrendering his Army of Tennessee to General William T. Sherman at Durham Station, North Carolina on April 26, 1865. Johnston's army, though stung, still had the morale and means with which to carry on the war. Unfortunately, there was no Confederacy left to defend and Johnston refused to commit his men to what would degenerate into an aimless, endless and bloody guerrilla war.Auction Info
