James McPherson and John A. Logan Letter Signed. One page of a bifolium, 7.75" x 9.75", "Near Utica in the field"; May 8, 1863. A letter written on behalf of and signed by Major General John A. Logan and James McPherson, requesting that Governor of Illinois Richard Yates promote a member of his staff. It reads, in full: "Mr. Stuart R. Tresilian has been on my staff for the past year as Division Engineer, and has rendered most efficient service both in that capacity: and in all of the duties of an aid-de-camp; On our last march his services were almost invaluable to the entire army. I request that you commission him as a Major in one of the Ills Regiments." McPherson has signed the letter below Logan's signature. With docketing on verso.

Stuart Tresilian was an Irish immigrant who came to the United States following the 1848 Irish Uprising. When the Civil War broke out, he served with the 49th Illinois Infantry before being promoted to General Logan's Staff. He died in 1869 after contracting tuberculosis.

Condition: Usual mail folds, with toning and foxing throughout. Light dampstaining affects McPherson's signature. Overall good.
