Description
Ivory Topped Cane with Provenance Identifying It to Confederate Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson, Circa 1840. 31½" ebony shaft with brass tip, the tip being somewhat cracked/chipped. The 2½" ivory top is beautifully carved in the form of a clenched fist with a shirt cuff. Rich mellow patina, the extreme tip of the thumb broken off. Brass ferrule at the base. The varnish on the shaft is clearly charred and bubbled for the bottom 6" near the tip. Accompanied by a framed Washington state newspaper article dated March 5, 1937 with the photograph of a man holding this exact cane. The caption identifies the cane as having "belonged to Stonewall Jackson, famous Confederate General, and was used by him to poke logs in the fireplace....E. C. Thompson of 1119 East 30th St., is shown here with the cane. He and Mrs. Thompson obtained it from a friend of Jackson's while in Richmond, Va. many years ago. The tip of the cane is charred where Jackson stuck it in the flames." Fascinating Jackson artifact.Auction Info
