Description

Irish Brigade, 69th Regiment, New York State Volunteers, Civil War ID Disc to New York City Chief of Police. The reverse is stamped, "Lieut. Peter Conlin / Co. E /69th / Reg. /N.Y.S.V. / N.Y. City". The obverse has a an American eagle with outstretched wings, and "War of 1861" above, and "United States", below. The 1.125" brass disc is holed at 12 o'clock. Pitted.

Prior to the Civil War, Collin had previous military service in New York City's Tompkins Blues. When Fort Sumter was shelled, Conlin immediately enlisted in Captain Boyle's Company G of the 12th New York State Militia. His company was one of the first to reach Washington and cross the Long Bridge into Virginia. When his first term of enlistment expired Conlin returned to New York City and reenlisted in the 69th Regiment on September 28, 1861 as a 2nd Lieutenant at the age of 21. He was discharged September 6, 1862. In 1869, Conlin joined the New York police Department as a patrolman. He advanced through every grade in the department, roundsman, sergeant, captain, and inspector. In 1895, Police Commissioner Theodore Roosevelt named Conlin chief of the New York City Police Department.
