Description
Historic Identification Badge of a Pennsylvanian Wounded at Gettysburg. This scarce suspension badge with stamped battle honors belonged to a hard fighting young enlisted man who was wounded twice in battle before being captured and dying from the effects of prison life. The commercially produced, gray metal identification badge features a raised profile of Maj. Gen. Kearney in the shield at the top. Suspended from it by way of two rotating links is a 1¼" circular disk on which is stamped "Wm McCUTCHEON/ Co. B/ 105 REG/P V/ BROOKVILLE Pa" On the reverse is a raised leaf design with "WAR OF 1861" at the top. Under this, and filling the remaining space on the back, have been stamped "Yorktown/ Williamsburg/ Fair Oaks/ 7 Days/ Before Richmond/ Malvern Hill/ Bull Run/ Chantilly/ Fredericksburg/ Chancellorsville."The owner was Private William McCutcheon who served in this unit from September, 1861 until his death as a parolee of Andersonville Prison in December 1864. McCutcheon was wounded in the shoulder at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863 and again at Spottsylvania on May 12, 1864. He was captured at the Pamunkey River on June 8, 1864 and sent to Andersonville. From there he was paroled to Charleston, South Carolina where he died in December. Very popular at the time, this badge is difficult to find today complete with its special swivel connecting chain and top shield. Other examples are known with profiles of McClellan, Hooker and Grant. Complete with the T-bar fastening pin, this is especially scarce and desirable with such an excellent history.
