Description

Historic Embroidered New York Cavalry Flag. This exquisite and highly patriotic example of the embroiderer's art saw service at the outset of the Civil War with Capt. George W. Sauer's Company "C" of New York's Third Cavalry, which answered Lincoln's first call for volunteers and formed for three months duty in the summer of 1861. Known as the German Hussars, the company mustered into Federal service and left the state on July 23 returning to muster out on November 2.

The condition is excellent with each side having colorful, lush embroidery on a sturdy deep blue silk field. Each side is bordered by a substantial gold thread double sprigged wreath of oak leaves and acorns at the base of which is a shield divided into the German red/ white/ black tricolors. The interiors of the leaves are in deep green velvet. At the top of each wreath is a charming design of a heavy gold American eagle with colorful thirteen-star American flags hanging from crossed halberds beneath it. A gold embroidered star is in each corner. The center panel of the obverse is a floss silk depiction of a hussar atop a white horse. The rider is in a light blue and gold uniform complete with fringed epaulets, wears a plumed shako and wields a saber. He is framed by a mix of blue sky and white clouds with shades of green, beige and brown on the ground. The center of the reverse has embroidered in heavy gold thread "3d. Reg't./ 1st. TROOP/ N.Y./ GERMAN HUSSARS" in varied lettering. The flag measures 24" at the fly and 21" at the hoist, with essentially all its nearly 2" wide cream colored fringe intact.

This flag is amazing on many levels - condition, detail, artistry, visual impact and history - and would be a worthy addition to the best collection. It is accompanied by letters of authenticity and research from renowned Civil War flag expert and author Howard Michael Madaus.
