Description

Handwritten 1817 Slave Receipt. One page, 7.5" x 4.75", Warsaw, Kentucky; October 21, 1817. A record of the sale of a slave to Henry Yates, in full: "I this day bargain sell and deliver to Henry Yates a certain negro boy known by the name of Henry for two hundred and twenty dollars to me in hand paid the said boy I warrant to be sound and Healthy now and before also against the claims of all other persons as witness my hand this 21st of October 1817." Henry Yates was the father of Illinois Governor, Richard Yates.

Condition: Flattened folds, with an uneven bottom edge. Light toning at the edges. Minor soiling and faint ink staining. Overall good.
