Great Group of Material Associated with Capt. Prosper Landry Donaldsonville Artillery (Louisiana) CSA. Prosper's full name was Jean Reynaud Jacque Prosper Landry. Commanding Landry's Battery. The group includes the following: Half plate early war tintype of Landry. Wears shell jacket with shoulder straps, standup collar with small crossed cannons, piping on the cuffs of the jacket. In his right hand, wearing a gauntlet, is a M1840 saber, and holds other gauntlet in his left hand which is resting on the table at his side. Confederate regulation kepi with quatrefoil and band around the base also on the table. He wears a two piece interlocking Louisiana buckle, with Pelican etc. clearly visible. Superb quality image in about perfect condition.; a cabinet portrait of Landry C. 1880, obviously copied from an earlier image with lengthy ID on verso. Wears what appears to be the kepi on the table, battle shirt, gauntlets, and what appears to be a foot officer's sword with knot. Some even fading but fine. By Kilbourne & Dion of Donaldsonville, La.; 8 1/4" X 11 3/4" ink manuscript orders dated July 11 1864 from "Hd. Qrs Arty A. N. Va." appointing Landry to be Capt. in Donaldsonville Artillery. Issued "By Com'd Genl Pendleton, signed by D. D. Pendleton A. A. G." On typical crude brown Confederate paper with some weakness at folds but bright crisp, sound document; a 2 1/2" X 2 3/4" shield shaped silver medal beautifully engraved "ARITHMETIC / 3rd Class Premium / Prosper Landry / George Town College D. C. / 1841" 1/2" suspension loop at top. Dark untouched patina in perfect condition with cloth storage bag.; two gold bullion stars with old note identifying them as having been part of Landry's uniform; a 1/9 plate tintype of an unidentified soldier wearing bummer's cap and uniform with shoulder tabs housed in a near mint Union Forever thermoplastic patriotic case; 5" X 7 3/4" document from US Provost Marshal's Office in Richmond, Va. dated May 22, 1865 stating Landry has taken the oath of allegiance; a manuscript journal, most likely a copy of a field diary but clearly done either period or very close to period, beginning with a listing of the officers of the Donaldsonville Artillery and commencing as a daily diary on September 18, 1861 and ending May 3, 1865. The journal is signed R. O. Landry. A remarkable document 5" X 8" with 80 crisp clear manuscript pages containing nearly daily entries of the activities and actions of the Donaldsonville Artillery. The unit was engaged in every major action of the Army of Northern Virginia including Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg The Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg and many others, with detailed accounts of all of these actions contained in the diary. Very fine sound condition. Also included are typewritten transcriptions of Landry's eyewitness account of Lee's surrender at Appomattox and a lengthy letter kept in journal form from Sept. 10 through Sept. 16 1864 to his wife. A remarkably detailed document which was translated from a letter written entirely in French. The account of the surrender contains much eyewitness information that is doubtless unknown and unpublished.A superb Confederate grouping associated with a gallant officer in one of the most heavily fought artillery units of the Army of Northern Virginia.
