Description

Great Civil War US Infantry Officer's Private Purchase Forage Cap. Although the letter H stitched to the front would imply enlisted use, the form maker, and quality would certainly indicate it's fabrication for the use of an officer. Fine quality blue wool. Stands 5" high at the front. 5/8" tarred leather chinstrap with brass adjusting buckle and exceptional quality eagle I side buttons. Tarred leather curved visor a full 11" wide. Heavily reinforced and stiffened seam at the back. Body with just two tiny moth holes, else perfect. 1" waffle finish Moroccan leather sweat band with two breaks but no loss and very supple. The black silk lining and padding that was on the interior sides is tattered but appears to be all present inside the hat. Remarkably, the black silk lightly quilted interior crown is in about perfect condition with bright, gilt embossed scrollwork and maker's name, "Mccormick & Bro./149 W. Baltimore St/Baltimore". Interestingly consigned from the same collection and the same maker as the four button artillery officer's fatigue blouse offered else where in this catalog. A great piece of Civil War US headgear in a form, and by a maker unique in our experience.
