Description

Great Civil War Presentation 'War Log' Cut from the Chickamauga Battlefield in 1890, 28" high, about 12" in diameter at the widest point in the center with the width resulting of the tree's growth around the embedded pieces of shrapnel. Log retains 98% of the original bark. On the front face of the log are five pieces of deeply embedded slightly curved shrapnel, 1" - 2" in size. The tree clearly grew around them for many years prior to it being cut. On the back side is the deeply embedded cup base from a 3" Hotchkiss shell. It is impossible to determine if the shrapnel and base are from the same shell, but that is certainly a very strong likelihood. The log is mounted on a 5 1/2" X 8 1/2" wooden base. Deep dark patina overall, with shrapnel pieces deeply embedded. The diameter at the top and bottom of the cut is about 6 1/2". Screwed in place on the top of the log is a worn 3 3/8" X 4 1/2" thick brass plaque which bears the following inscription in block letters, "This section of a tree which was taken from the Battle Field of Chickamonga (sic) in Walker County, Georgia, 9 miles from Chattanooga, which battle was fought Septr 18th, 19th, 20th 1863 by the Federal and Confederate armies. Presented by Colonel Tomlinson Fort, a brave and distinguished officer to his friend & tutor James C. White. July 30th 1890". Plaque with deep dark patina around the edges with notable wear in the center with the inscription clearly the object of examination by many hands. Tomlinson Fort was from Milledgeville, Ga. and was commissioned into the 1st Georgia Regular Infantry on 2/1/61 as a 1st Lieutenant. Fort was wounded at Malvern Hill 7/1/62, 2nd Manassas 8/30/62 and hospitalized 6/23/64 in Savannah, Ga. He was commissioned Captain 4/24/62 and his photograph in the Civil War Research Database identifies him is "Col.". A great 'War Log' with really superb history'
