Great Civil War Grouping Associated with Abner H. Edwards Co. G 139th Illinois Vol. Inf. Edwards enlisted in the 139th, a 100 day regiment, on 6/1/64 and mustered out with the regiment on 10/28/64. Although not engaged, the regiment saw service during Price's Invasion and marched into Missouri in pursuit of Price in October. The group includes the following: His arrow back oval US buckle, neatly carved on the back "A. H. E. / Co. G / 139th Ills." Perfect untouched condition with nice patina.; A 2" diameter steel circle with a sliding 2 1/4" pin, attached to a piece of paper with period ink inscription, " Blanket pin A. H. Edwards G. 139th Ills 1864". Some light surface rust else excellent; Edwards GAR membership badge; His ladder badge with three bars Co. G / 139 / Illinois on blue silk ribbon with safety pin back on top bar; A 2 1/4" X 9" red silk ribbon embossed in gilt for the Fourth Re-union of the Western Iowa Veteran's Association, in 1887 with a celluloid campaign pinback for Albert S. Cummins as "Iowa's Next Senator" attached at the bottom. Both pieces in about perfect condition; Edward's forage/bummer's cap neatly carved on the underside of the tarred visor "A. H. Edwards". Rather coarse blue wool body, unbound tarred visor and chinstrap, with brass adjusting buckle, eagle side buttons. Just a few small moth holes, really negligible and overall really excellent. 1 1/4" soft leather sweatband 90% intact with the brown cotton lining just showing some minor use and fading else about perfect. Shadows of the original insignia clearly visible on the top of the hat and the original insignia, 139 / G is included. Really a great ID'd Civil War bummer's cap.; Tin drum canteen with brown wool cover and original linen sling. 7" diameter with the sides slightly convex and the seam forming a median ridge. Embossed with a 4" diameter ring on both sides. Tin spout, the original stopper attached to the sling with twisted string. 3/4" wide white linen sling, shows considerable wear with a couple of knots for repair and retains the original small iron roller buckle. Brown wool cover shows honest wear with a few small holes but 95% intact and generally excellent, several areas with brown spattering. Although bearing a striking resemblance to known forms of Confederate canteens, research indicates this is, in fact, a rare Illinois state issue, and Edwards initials, A. H. E., are lightly carved on the spout. One face of the canteen with very shallow dent at the top, the other face with a large diagonal dent, that almost gives the appearance of the piece having been run over by something.; A 37" long cane constructed from a tree branch with silver head bearing the following inscription on top, "Cut At North Bend, Ohio. / Sept. 10th 1841 / Abner Edwards / from / Samuel". Also small silver escutcheons at the wrist loop hole. Iron and brass tip with a soldered sheet tin sleeve extending an additional 5" from the brass , possibly representing an old repair. Overall fine untouched condition, the silver head with nice untouched patina.; Copies of Edwards' records as well as a group of C. 1880 cabinet cards of family members including an elderly Edwards.Really an exceptionally nice grouping with superb ID.
