Forage Cap with Original Insignia Identified to Ruden E. Wheeler Co M 22nd New York Cavalry Exhibiting original insignia, with dark blue wool body that shows scattered moth holes, the largest being 3/4", retains its original leather chin strap with eagle side buttons and brass adjusting buckle. Leather visor showing typical crazing to the tarred finish. Interior 1 1/2' leather sweatband showing minor wear, lined with brown polished cotton in fine condition exhibiting honest service wear but no damage. Crown features original cavalry insignia with 1" letter "M" and 3/4" numbers "22", untouched and original to the cap, held fast with undisturbed leather tabs.
Identified to Ruden Wheeler who mustered in as a private on January 4, 1864. On February 2,1864 Ruden mustered into Co. I 22nd NY Cavalry, finally transferring to Company M on March 15,1864. By June 1,1865 he was promoted to sergeant. Mustered out on August 1, 1865.
The 22nd New York Cavalry served with the Army of the Potomac and the Army of the Shenandoah.
