First Model Maynard .50 Caliber Carbine Serial # 2181 Identified to James A. Callaway 5th Battalion Hillard's Legion and 10th CS Cavalry This is a very nice untouched example, serial number 2181 falling in the serial range of guns purchased by the State of Mississippi on December 20, 1860. 20" barrel, .50 caliber. All metal smooth and dark with just a few small patches of very light pitting. Excellent bore, mechanically perfect, nipple broken. Complete and original in every respect including tang sight, Maynard tape priming mechanism, patchbox and open barrel sights. Wood smooth with nice rich patina and flame grain on the comb, completely untouched. The left cheek carved with a birds head and the initials "J.A.C.".
James A. Callaway enlisted as a private in Hillards Legion, 5th Battalion Alabama Cavalry on 2/5/1862 for a period of 12 months. Hillard's Legion was organized at Montgomery Alabama and one mounted battalion ( of which Callaway was assigned) would subsequently be assigned to the 10th CS cavalry regiment. Accompanying the gun are copies of Callaway's records.
