Description
Fine Condition, Very Scarce, Civil War French Chasseur Jacket as Worn by Elite Regiments from Pennsylvania, New York, and Massachusetts. This is a fine example of the rare and colorful "chasseur" uniform coat purchased from France at the outbreak of the war and worn by several distinguished Army of the Potomac regiments including the 62nd and 83rd Pa., 18th Mass. and at least one unit of New York's Excelsior Brigade. The tunic is made from heavy wool broadcloth with yellow piping along the collar, cuffs and outer seam. The front closes with nine pewter buttons (two missing) decorated with a unique eagle/ shield/ stars design specially manufactured for these America-bound uniforms. There are two smaller buttons at each cuff and another at the left side holding a piped belt loop. Four large buttons, more piping and two small yellow wool "bugles" adorn the coat tails. Affixed by small buttons to the shoulders are the original, imposing medium green wool epaulets trimmed at the crescents with wide yellow cord from which hangs narrow dark green fringe. The quilted white canvas interior is perfect with the usual soiling expected from service in the field. There are no markings except for some miscellaneous, blue French manufacturer's stamps. The coat reflects genuine period use but overall condition is complete and very sound with some negligible mothing mostly on the back.In 1861 the U.S. Government contracted with the Godillot firm in Paris for 10,000 sets of infantry clothing based on that worn by the French light riflemen. Delivery was made in December and the sets were issued to three regiments of Gen. Fitz-John Porter's division of the Army of the Potomac who had earned them by winning a drill competition. This is an example of one of those prized garments. One of the more colorful tunics from the Civil War and exceedingly difficult to find today.
