Description
Fine Condition Regulation Civil War Infantryman's Overcoat. This standard infantry enlisted man's overcoat apparently saw service in the war and yet is in remarkable condition. It is as described in the 1861 uniform regulations which called for a coat "of sky-blue cloth; stand up collar; single breasted; cape to reach down to the elbows when the arm is extended, and to button all the way up." The blue kersey body is in near perfect condition with two of the original five large, brass general service buttons remaining on the front (along with one large "civilian" replacement button). All six smaller buttons are on the cape. The kersey adjustment belt and button remain on the back and each sleeve ends in a 3" deep cuff as per regulation. The 3" tall collar is reinforced by four rows of stitching. The interior lining is a striking bright red wool twill with white cotton sleeve lining. A 2" x 8" section of brown cotton has been added by the soldier in the back for further reinforcement. The colorful lining is very sound with a handful of small holes and fraying around the arm pits from contemporary wear. Aside from a 5" seam opening at the collar, the coat is otherwise in great condition with only one or two very tiny moth nips. This is a standard piece of a Union soldier's uniform and in unusually good condition for a garment that saw wartime service.Auction Info
