Description

Fantastic Hand-Drawn Map of Vicksburg, Mississippi Drawn by J. H. Smith, Co. A, 34th Georgia Infantry, Circa 1863. Pencil with red highlights, on paper. 15 ¾ x 12 ½-inches. The Vicksburg Campaign was a series of maneuvers by General U.S. Grant designed to defeat the last major Confederate stronghold on the Mississippi. When two major assaults failed to shift the Confederates Grant decided to lay siege to the city. This action commenced on May 25, 1863 and ended when the garrison city finally surrendered on July 4, 1863. This unique first-hand look at the situation in and around Vicksburg was produced by J. H. Smith. Sadly, little is known of Smith, but given the rather naïve execution, one might presume he was a very young man. The 34th Regiment of the Georgia Volunteer Infantry was an active participant during the Vicksburg Campaign, finding itself almost entirely captured at the end of the siege.

Close scrutiny of Smith's map reveals many interesting features including the artillery emplacements (Fort Hill) on the bluffs north of the city, the position of Confederate General Richard Taylor's brigade, Federal positions, and naval engagements on the Mississippi. In many instances he's accented his map with red highlights to indicate muzzle blasts or general destruction. Smith was certainly no trained cartographer as his sense of compass direction is off, getting his northerly direction correct but failing to properly place his east, south and west. Smith has signed his name near the lower right corner "By B. H. Smith / Co. A 34 Ga."

Condition: Good. The map was once folded into sixteenths and remnants of the fold creases can be seen. There's a 3-inch closed tear in the midsection of the map, but it does not adversely affect the view. Additionally there is uniform toning, occasional spotting and a few areas of soiling.
