Description

Extremely Rare Civil War Recruitment Broadside Seeking African-American Soldiers: "COME AND JOIN US BROTHERS." 15.5" x 12.5". Published by the Supervisory Committee for Recruiting Colored Regiments and lithographed by P.S. Duval & Son, Lithographers, Philadelphia. This colorful lithograph was likely printed in early 1863, when the Union army began enlisting African-American men under the authority of the Emancipation Proclamation. The artist has taken care to depict the faces of the men with sensitivity, as it was common in this period for African-American to be depicted in caricature and typically in offensive ways. This example shows the remnants of an old frame along the edges and bears traces of old, smoothed fold creases. A contemporary (illegible) note appears just above the lower edge, otherwise the colors remain vivid and this example is in very good condition.
