Description
Exquisite Silver and Gold Civil War 3rd Corps Badge and Silver Rank Insignia of Col. Edward Lyon Bailey, 2d New Hampshire Vols. Bailey entered the regiment as a captain on June 7, 1861, rose through the ranks and assumed command of the regiment on April 18, 1863, and commanded it at Gettysburg where he was wounded. Bailey mustered out with the regiment on June 21, 1864, subsequently joining the regular army and serving until 1893. The 2d New Hampshire was engaged in many of the major actions of the Army of the Potomac during their term of service including 1st Bull Run, the Peninsula, Gettysburg, and Cold Harbor. The three piece badge incorporates a gold 5/16" x 1 3/8" riband at the top with T-bar pin back inscribed Hooker. Suspended from this is a 3/8" x ¾" silver half shell of a Minié bullet. The lower piece is a heavy silver 1 1/8" x 1 9/16" 3rd Corps badge inscribed 2d N. H. /V. with a decorative engraved border, also exhibiting a T-bar pin back and possibly originally worn separately. The matching/opposing 2¾" silver colonel's eagles are of absolutely the finest quality exhibiting remarkable detail with a red stone inlaid at the eye. Quite heavy, each with a T-bar pinback and possibly worn directly on the shoulder without straps. The entire set was passed down through Bailey's direct lineal descendants. An absolutely gorgeous set of Civil War officer's insignia worn by the commander of one of the war's most gallant regiments, the 2d having lost 178 officers and men killed and mortally wounded during their term of service.Auction Info
