Description

Exceptionally Complete Federal Issue Haversack. One of the standard items of equipment North or South, the simply made haversack carried a soldier's rations and eating utensils. This excellent and whole example of the standard U.S. haversack shows minimal wear and is complete with its internal storage bag. The tarred canvas body measures about 12" x 12", with an approximate 3" gusset at the bottom to allow for expansion. The original 2" wide should strap is intact and sound. The flap closes by means of a thin leather strap that passes through a roller buckle below, both fastened to the body by copper rivets. Inside is the original unpainted, removable white canvas bag still attached by three tin buttons. Overall condition is excellent for such an item. The tarred canvas body is stiff and dirty from storage with a few small openings in the fabric, particularly where the flap bends at the top. A highly utilitarian piece of equipment seldom found this sound and complete.
