Description
Exceptional and Rare Cavalry Officer's "Hardee" Hat. This striking example of the seldom-available officer's pattern 1858 Army Hat is in remarkable condition and complete with its entire array of original embroidered insignia as per regulations. The stiff black felt body shows little wear, with a brim measuring just over 3" turned up on the right and secured to the side by the traditional oval "national arms" device consisting of a gold eagle embroidered on a black velvet background and edged with spun wire. The underside of the brim is edged with a 3/8" wide, ribbed silk edging. At the base of the body is a ½" ribbed silk ribbon over which rests a high quality set of "machined" style officer hat cords ending in large tarnished gold "acorn" finials and gold netting. On the left side is affixed a black wool knitted rosette with a brass general service button in the center into which is placed three original ostrich plumes one of which is still completely intact and two partially, giving the headgear great visual appeal. The front of the hat is set off with its original gold embroidered "crossed sabers" cavalry insignia measuring nearly 4" across. Only a small section of the spun wire edging has sprung and can be very easily re-affixed. All embroidered insignia are attached by means of leather thongs on the interior. The cross-hatched leather sweatband measures about 1¾" wide and is complete and sound. There is no lining. Unlike the more familiar enlisted man's version, there are far fewer surviving copies of the privately-purchased officer's dress hat of which this is an especially wonderful example in superb condition.Auction Info
