Description
Excellent Regulation Cavalryman's Overcoat, Dated 1864. This is a classic example of the U.S. Army enlisted man's overcoat "for all mounted corps" and conforms perfectly to the 1861 uniform regulations which calls for a coat "of sky blue cloth; stand and fall collar; double breasted; cape to reach down the cuff of the coat when the arm is extended, and to button all the way up." The kersey wool body is in excellent condition, with two rows of six large general service "eagle" coat buttons (two missing) on the front and with its original long cape retaining all twelve of its smaller brass buttons. Each sleeve ends in a cuff nearly 6" deep and it retains its kersey belt in the back with large brass adjustment button. Four rows of stitching reinforce the rising part of the collar. The interior is likewise excellent with a heavy brown and white cotton body lining and a lighter, white lining in the sleeves. A breast pocket of brown printed cotton is sewn onto the chest. One sleeve is clearly stenciled in black "E. TRACY/ PHIL'A/ Oct 21st 64" along with three small size "dots" and the arsenal inspector stamp "14." The other sleeve bears the size number "3" and both sleeves have the later stamp of a costumer. Condition is sound and near perfect showing little wear, no discoloration and just one or two negligible seam openings. Philadelphian Eliashib Tracy had a number of contracts for military goods during the Civil War including one on October 21, 1864 for 100,000 cavalry greatcoats of which this is one. A standard uniform for mounted troops, this is a remarkable example worthy of the best collections.Auction Info
