Confederate Texas Resolution Supporting Jefferson Davis, one page, 6" x 9.5". "Joint Resolutions Of the State of Texas," approved December 16, 1863. In part, "Whereas, the present war waged by the Government of the United States upon the Government, people and property of the Confederate States, is without precedent in its atrocity and unchristian character; and whereas, the comparative exemption of our own dear State from many of the more dire concomitants of war, may have been construed as a cause for our unanimity in sustaining our Government: therefore, be it...Resolved by the Legislature of the State of Texas,...that although as a free people we have exercised the rights of criticism upon the acts of our President and his Cabinet, yet we here record our full confidence in the patriotism and ability of President Davis; and...we would not exchange him for any citizen of the Confederacy, as the pilot to carry us through the present stormy struggle for liberty, as a people, and for independence as a nation."
