Description

Confederate Soldier's Letter. Five-page letter on two separate sheets of blue bond paper, Birds Mill on Chickamauga Creek, October 8, 1863 (updated several times), from Harry T. Curl (Deshler's Brigade Cleburne's Div. Tenn.) to his wife. Discusses sending her $300 in a previous letter, a man coming up from Texas with mail for the soldiers, going from Harrison to Chattanooga, taking possession of Dug Gap in Pidgeon Mountain, being shelled by Union forces without much effect, attacking Union forces at McLemore's Cove forcing them to skedaddle, holding off a Union assault at Catlett's Gap for two days, attacking Union troops at Chattanooga ("... charged the enemy in their breastworks and killed and captured a great many..."), the death of the popular General Deshler as he stood upon a caisson cheering his men, Patrick Cleburne complimenting the brigade on its holding a key position for two days which two other brigades had failed to do ("...we are known as Genl Cleburne's first Brigade having won his favor in the retreat from Tullahoma Tenn..."), describes the desolation of the Georgia/ Tennessee countryside, relates how Nathan Bedford Forrest and his men tore up the collard and tater garden of a old lady, "President Davis is here. He came here five days ago to assist Genl Bragg in future operations...", wounded men being transported to hospitals in Georgia indicating a battle is imminent, he regrets not being at home to tease "Kerry Curl No. 2... a fast little girl", acknowledges the impossibility of his wife crossing the Mississippi River for a visit, closing with "...take good care of our little nondescript..." According to notations on the letter, Curl later served in the 17th Consolidated Regiment of Texas Cavalry, Company B, Smith's Brigade. Separation at folds, with three strips of applied paper tape. Great content!
