Confederate Letters and Documents Including Jubal Early ANS. Four war-time documents, including: 1) 2-page letter from P. L. Watson to Heather, Camp near Trenton, Louisiana, July 2, 1863, talks about capturing about 1,200 Negroes near Delphi that the Yankees were using to grow cotton, subsequently burning their commissary stores, also mentions having to leave behind a shirt, pants and knapsack. 2) a two-sided "Accounts Sales to Officers" with itemized listing of products (fruit, cigars, liquor) sold to named officers with the charges incurred, undated, not known if Union or Confederate. 3) A manuscript list of provisions (accomplished on the front and back of a bifolium sheet) provided by Robert Hudgins at Fauquier White Sulphur Springs in July 1862 with annotations indicating how the sundries were allocated to various regiments, with October 13,1862 Jubal Early note written in pencil at bottom asking Captain Jett to "ascertain from the officers present with the 12th Ga. Regiment... the amount of the above articles which were used... & direct his commissary to make out the account in regular form & I will order the payment. J. A. Early Brig Genl. Cmdg Div." 4) a two-sided letter from Major L. L. Locke to Major S. S. French in Richmond, Office Chief Commissary, Savannah, June 6, 1864. An extensive and detailed letter regarding the transportation of corn meal and bacon to various commanders, their consumption rates, quotas, etc. "It is my painful duty to inform you that I have great misgivings about the corn supply and that I fear a famine is approaching. Not an oz. is coming in to Major Miller at present as Planters & Farmers do not desire his obligations to pay of which he has already $1,500,000,000 already outstanding." The farmers prefer to exchange their corn for suet. "Add to this that the operations of this Dept. have been much paralyzed by the multifarious acts of Congress & by the intensive interference of enrolling & other officers with its employees. The only men we hold securely now are those detailed by the Secretary of War."
