Description

Confederate Letters and Document. 1) 2-page stampless cover from Joseph E. West to his sister [n.p., March 7th]. He mentions a couple who visited their camp because their son had joined the Sparta Greys without their consent and the father was now required to join the unit himself. In the end, the son was able to take his father's place. "Our force is falling back & the Yankees taking their places. I think it was wrong to leave Evansport so soon & destroy so much baggage & so many guns... It is also reported that the Caroline Cavalry have taken some 4 or 5 Yankeys..." 2) 2-page letter written in pencil on both sides of a single sheet from Fred M. Isbell to Anna. "... some hard fihting gowing on her. I nevr saw sow meny worned-kill in me life... its nothing to see for or five bags fool arms and legs. I wors in hope that thay would send me ther and let ous giv the yankees a trial." 3) 3 1/2" x 2" manuscript note set within an album page with "window" on both sides. One side appears to be a fragment from a letter expressing hope that the war will end soon, as soldiers conscripted by the Yankees won't perform well ("Men forced to fight cant be good soldiers"). The other side is a brief accounting of foodstuffs intended for the use of men of the Mobation Battery, signed by Lt. C. C. Banes.
