Description

Confederate Etched Blade Foot Officer's Sword by Boyle & Gamble of Richmond, Virginia. The blade is 30" with unstopped fuller and typical flaw 6" from the hilt. The blade is smooth and light gray with just some scattered salt and peppering and even some touches of luster. Very nicely etched for half its length with scroll work, Confederate battleflag, and shield with stars on the obverse. Scroll work with battle flag and shield with CSA on the reverse. Etching 80% visible and in most areas quite crisp. The hilt with characteristic notched pommel cap and displaying the rather poor finish typical of these swords. Completely untouched with a dark heavy patina. Leather grip wrapped with a single strand of copper wire, excellent. really a very nice sword. The bottom stitched leather scabbard retains only traces of the original finish and is quite dry and shrunken considerably. There is a well done old repair just above the lower mount. Brass mounts near perfect with no dents, each held in place with a brass pin and displaying the same deep untouched, almost encrusted, patina that is on the hilt. A nice representative example of an etched blade Confederate foot officer's sword by a known and desirable maker.
