Description

Confederate Broadside Written in Spanish. Most unusual 7" x 15 1/2" broadside written in Spanish, May 30, 1862, Corpus Christi, Texas, concerning General Order No. 7 issued on April 30, 1862, signed in type by First Commissioner Felix A. Blucher and Provost Marshal Carlos Lovenskiold. Titled: "Estados Confederarados De America. Sub-Districto Del Rio Grande. Jurisdicion Militar del Campamento en Corpus Christi." The broadside details eight articles or rules covering the inhabitants of the district. The authorities trust in the patriotism of the people to voluntarily comply with the regulations. Martial law is proclaimed. All white males are required to register with the commissioners and respond to questions. Such registrants can remain in their current place of residence if they comply with the laws of the state and mandates of the commission. The owners of ranches are responsible for the conduct of their employees and household members. No plays or dances are permitted. No transients or migrant workers allowed to sojourn without presenting proof of employment. Ranch owners who allow such people to stay on their property without approval of the commission are subject to fine or imprisonment. Complaints about legal disputes or persons engaging in disorderly conduct must be directed to the commission. Light wear at folds with minor foxing. We have never seen or heard of any other CSA documents written in a foreign language. Great Texas association!
