Description

Classic Civil War Confederate Company Grade Officer's Kepi, likely North Carolina. 'Butternut' wool body excellent, just showing some honest wear and some scattered fading. One very small seam opening at the front of the hat at visor. Hat stands 2 3/4" at the front. Two 1/8" brown, possibly originally black and now faded, worsted wool bands around the top of the base. Two bands vertically at front, back and both sides. One band around the edge of the crown and two bounds forming classic quatrefoil in the center of the crown. Piping all sound and tight. Tarred leather visor with stitched oilcloth edging. Cuff size US staff side buttons and simply a single strand 1/8" brown worsted wool cord as chinstrap. The interior of the hat exhibits only shreds of the black silk lining remaining although the black silk quilted crown is 100% intact. Retains much of the original padding which appears to be a combination of cotton and horsehair. The sweatband is missing although most of the paste board backing, with a number of breaks, remains. A quintessential Civil War Confederate officer's kepi completely untouched.
