Description
Civil War Union Staff Captain's Frock Coat and Vest. Coat with single breasted nine button front, which retains the original 9 staff officer's buttons on the front, plus two on each tail. The closed cuffs each with three cuff size buttons. All of the buttons are backmarked "Thomas N. Dale & Co New York". The coat of exceptionally fine quality blue wool with great sleeve cut and 2 1/8" high black velvet lined standup collar. Noteworthy sleeve tufting at the shoulders. The coat retains a pair of Captain of Staff shoulder straps held fast with straight pins, both straps with velvet centers, one with loose brass edging along one side. Coat exhibits some minor scattered mothing, all of which being really insignificant. Interior of the coat with black polished cotton lining with finely quilted breast, one breast pocket on left side, white silk sleeve lining. Lining overall excellent, just showing some deterioration in the arm pit areas from honest use. Interior tail/skirt pocket lined with brown polished cotton.The vest, with collar rising to 1 1/4" at the back, retains 7 of the original 9 cuff size cloth covered closure buttons. Constructed of fine quality blue wool with single exterior 'watch pocket' on right side and 'watch' and breast pocket on left, all lined with brown polished cotton. Vest body shows mothing at the waist and a few scattered holes. Lined with white cotton with some stains but very sound. The belted back of brown polished cotton, black Japanned buckle is patent dated 1855.
